Enthusiastic, motivated — and helpful

Tutor-Mentor Antonio Jackson and Partner Teacher Jahnobi Bora.

After teaching for almost three decades, Jahnobi Bora knows what motivates students.

The three Tutor-Mentors who have helped in her classroom “surpassed my expectations” in every regard, including their enthusiasm for learning, she said.

Their confidence quickly increased as they “learned how much they are capable of” by helping younger students.

“I love the experience and I love coming here. It motivates me to do better every single day,” said Tutor-Mentor Antonio Jackson, 16. Much to his surprise, he’s now considering a career as a teacher.” I didn’t think this would happen,” Jackson said. “I’m doing better in school because I want to have a better future.”

“It’s like having another adult in the classroom, someone who keeps everyone involved. All have been willing to be part of our students’ lives,” Bora said. Jackson, who helps in two classrooms, said he enjoys experiencing different styles of teaching.

Bora appreciates Jackson’s initiative, punctuality, and thoughtfulness.

Dacia Giordana, program coordinator for Root 2 Rise at Meadow View Elementary School in Sun Prairie, said these skills are valuable in other aspects of life – and on resumes. Tutor-Mentors also have the opportunity to earn the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Employability Skills & Youth Leadership certificates, further confirmation of their mastery of useful skills.
